In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
